CA POST-Certified Firearms Training and POST Courses

Hi, my name is Shaun Sundahl and I am 44 years old. In 2002, I was sworn in as a police officer for an undisclosed agency in California. 

In 2019, I became part of my department’s firearm training cadre and by 2023, I was promoted to range master supervisor. Most of my training was paid for out of my own pocket and own time. 

I am currently on the basic police academy chemical agent and firearms training cadre. I have worked at our regional police academy for more than 5 years.

Every year, at least 2-4 times, I complete updated tactical or firearms training from reputable sources that include government or private training entities. A snapshot of my training record and certifications includes Sig Sauer Ballistic Shield Operator Instructor, NRA Law Enforcement Handgun Instructor, CA POST Rifle, Pistol, Shotgun, Pistol Red Dot Instructor, POST Train-the-Trainer Pistol Red Dot Instructor, POST Train-the-Trainer Less Lethal Instructor, POST MACTAC Instructor, POST MACTAC Team Leader Instructor, POST Low Light Instructor, POST Diversionary Device Instructor,  POST Less Lethal Instructor (37/40mm), POST Chemical Agent Instructor, Pepper Spray Instructor, ALERTT Level I Instructor (Active Shooter), Basic SWAT School, and over 120 hours of continuing SWAT training. On a monthly basis, I attend regularly scheduled SWAT training.

In 2019, I authored Stalker Poison: A Safety Guide for Women Experiencing Domestic Violence and Stalking.

In 2023, I became the first of two SWAT operators in my department 100 year + history (and second oldest SWAT student in a 35 student class). Although the SWAT team is in its infancy and manpower lacking, I regularly participate in regional SWAT training with other agencies, and I use specialized knowledge, skills, and abilities of basic SWAT tactics to train officers.

I believe that all firearm instructors who provide shooting courses to citizens, armed security, military veterans, or law enforcement officers, should be a lifetime student. When searching for a qualified gun instructor to give you shooting lessons, it’s okay to ask the instructor “When is the last time you attended a course to update your training and when?”
